Government Brings Home More Than 200 Latter-day Saint Missionaries Stranded Abroad

While thousands of missionaries are now heading to their new assignments, more than 200 missionaries who were stranded abroad had finally come home to Latin America. Thanks to the generous help of consulates and embassies from various countries, these young missionaries serving this time of COVID-19 pandemic had returned to their homes safely.

According to the Church, throughout these weeks on different humanitarian flights, 151 Colombian missionaries arrived, 75 missionaries came to Columbia from Mexico, 71 from Brazil, and 5 from Guatemala. Meanwhile, 160 foreign missionaries serving in Columbia were able to return to their families.

“I am very encouraged because I will be able to continue working on the site and in my homeland, I am very encouraged by the love they show us when paying for this flight,” said Elder Perez from Cartagena.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, the Church had been working hard with consulates and embassies to bring missionaries back. The missionaries who recently came back to their home countries are complying with the health security protocol to further prevent the spread of the virus. They are now undergoing a mandatory 14-day quarantine before receiving their new assignment. According to the official statistics by the Church, so far, more than 400 missionaries from different countries in Latin America and the United States have left Columbia and 183 Colombians had arrived. Necessary steps are being taken by the Church to ensure the safe return of more missionaries to their homes.
