The spirit of the sabbath day is to worship both outwardly, by going to church and partaking of the sacraments and performing uses or services for one another, and inwardly, by reflecting and examining our hearts to see that we are sweeping the rooms of our hearts clean, so as to prepare for Christ spirit to dwell within us. It is also to reflect on our faith, charity and our good works, or our treatment of others. To be pious in outward things and not at the same time inwardly, is a worship that is un genuine and serves not our Lord, God, but our selfs.

Matt 7 – 21
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

We do all this that we might keep ourselves un spotted from the world, to better resit temptations, and to keep our hearts and minds on the things of heaven, for the coming week. We do things on the sabbath that will bring us closer to our Heavenly Father and His spirit, as we neglect the things of this world, and also our own natural man desires. It is the seventh day, a day of rest and peace, a rest and peace from the temptations, and our own cares, and of this world. Of course some have duties and works to preform, yet this is the principal and spirit of that law.To turn your foot away is to turn your natural man’s wants and desires away.

Isaiah 58:13 – 14
If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.
